Ron Taylor for Senate campaign

When Democrats in Ron Taylor's newly re-districted area began to rally around him as he was vying for the retiring senator’s position at the statehouse, it became obvious that he needed to find a visual identity that would instill confidence in voters. After meeting with Ron, I could see why Democrats had chosen him. He was incredibly knowledgeable about politics and was passionate about making a change. However, finding that perfect balance between conveying his commitment while also staying approachable and relatable was the biggest challenge. I had to create a unique campaign brand design that encompassed his personality and enthusiasm, giving him a clear voice in the local political arena. In short, I needed to create a powerful visual presence for him—one that would stand out in this new political landscape but also make an indelible impression on citizens from all walks of life.

Ron decided to incorporate the unmistakable symbolism of his firefighting service. He specifically wanted the design for his political identity to be very reflective of public service—so a firefighter's helmet was felt to be the perfect touch. The firefighter's helmet both communicated Ron's voice in politics as well as his brand aesthetic. The iconic symbol was the perfect way to unify together the professional and political identities of future the senator. The finished logo featured the firefighter's helmet illustration on the letter R in Ron's name, complemented by colors of apple green, grey navy blue and cream.

I wanted to ensure that the campaign brand was both strong and flexible, by selecting a typeface that could not only accentuate the professionalism of an elected official, but also bring out his relatable side. A choice I eventually came upon was the Collier typeface. With its regal curves and multiple font instances, it gave the campaign logo a stately quality and a fun attitude at the same time. Overall, this campaign had striking elements that could be used across different applications.
